Mom's new slippers |
I learned to knit with Ms. Kutch in my 8th grade Home Economics class (about 30 years ago-ouch!). We learned basics for sewing, cooking, knitting. Believe it or not, this is the pattern we used to learn to knit with. I must have knitted 50 pairs of these pom-pom slippers back in the day. I think everybody got at least one pair!!! When I found the pattern recently, I was so excited to give it a try and see if I could still do it. It worked, I did it! If you don't know how to do a "knit" or "pearl" stitch, just go to youtube and find a short video that will give directions step-by-step. Or, try this one.
I wish I could explain how here on my blog, but my knitting career was very short lived =) I am happy to just be able to make these darling little things! I just love them.
Pom Pom Vintage Slipper pattern:
2 skeins of yarn
size 10 knitting needles
darning needle
Body:
Cast on 26 stitches using both strands of yarn, and then knit one row across as a base row
Row 1: knit 8, pearl 1, knit 8, pearl 1, knit 8
Row 2: knit all the way across
Repeat Row 1 & Row 2 until you count about 15 complete rows.
End on Row 2.
Toe:
Row 1: knit 1, pearl 1
Row 2: repeat Row 1 until you complete about 10 rows.
Cut about 12 inches of slack in the yarn to leave an end, and thread the needle. Draw the threaded needle through the stitches one-by-one through the loop that sits on the needle, dropping them off as you do, and pull it tight. Sew the two edges together to make a "pocket" for your toes by using that yarn. Sew the "toe" area complete and extend down around 2 more inches in to the "body" of the slipper. Seal it with a knot to hold.
Make a pom pom to sew on top, or use a large colored button to decorate.
I hope these directions are okay, remember they are from a pattern designed for young ones so they are very simple. I have never had the chance to knit anything else in my life, but I have always wanted to set aside time to knit a few more of these for my Mom. She still talks about these slippers and how much she loved them! They lasted forever. Won't she be surprised to receive these in the mail?

Watch out, next I will pull out my "wrap-around skirt" pattern that Ms. Kutch taught us all to make. I wonder if she knew that her teachings would travel for so many years after that class ended...
Enjoy,
